Student Information

Our host families vary as much as the students and visitors who stay with them. A Harmony Homestay staff member will interview all prospective Host Families and complete a home visit before placing students or visitors with them. We make the best possible match using the information given by you on your application form and the host family application form. We match you and your host family according to interests and accommodate any special needs you may have. You can stay in a Homestay for any length of time from a few days to over a year.

Harmony Homestay Student / Visitor Guarantee

  • To place you in a safe and convenient English speaking home.
  • To personally select a host family within 45 minutes of the school.
  • To ensure that your family has been individually interviewed and screened in their home prior to your arrival.
  • To place you in a host family home with no more that 2 other international students.
  • To match you with a host family prior to your arrival.
  • To meet with the host family prior to your arrival.
  • To to provide airport transfer services, if requested.
  • To complete a student/visitor orientation at the host family home upon arrival in Vancouver.  
  • To contact you and your host family during the homestay program to ensure that all your needs are met.
  • To make necessary arrangements if you extend your stay in Canada.
  • To place you with another host family (at no extra cost) within 2 weeks of your arrival, if there is a problem that cannot be solved.

Your Host Family will

  • Provide a private, furnished bedroom which will include a bed, desk, drawers, a lamp and storage space.
  • Provide three meals a day.
  • Provide a safe, clean and comfortable home.
  • Treat you with respect and kindness.
  • Provide access to shared laundry, telephone, television and bath facilities.
  • Help you get oriented around your new neighborhood and to Canadian traditions.
  • Show you how to use the local transportation system.
  • Encourage you and assist you with your anguage studies and sightseeing plans.
  • Provide you with a key to your new home.
  • Be Canadian citizens and will speak English in their home.
  • Provide internet access. No dial-up.
  • Give one month notice to terminate the homestay.

As a Homestay Visitor you must agree to: 

  • Keep your room neat and clean.
  • Inform your host family when you will not be home for a meal or if you will be late.
  • Abide by reasonable household rules.
  • Be responsible for your house key.
  • Purchase a phone card for long distance calls.
  • Be responsible for your own transportation (public transportation available).
  • Be responsible for personal care items. 
  • Offer to pay for your own items when you go out with your host family.
  • Be responsible for payment of homestay fees at the time of arrival and at the first day of each consecutive month.
  • Be responsible and pay for any damage or injury to a person that you may cause.
  • Abide by all the laws of Canada that pertains to this agreement.
  • Give one month notice to terminate the homestay.


International Visitor Student Visa

  • Students intending to study in Canada for longer than 6 months must apply for a Study Permit.

  • If studying for less than 6 months, you must apply for a Visitors VISA.

  • A student must first receive an acceptance letter from the school that they will attend.  This letter must be used to apply for a Study Permit.

  • The acceptance letter should be taken to the nearest Canada Immigration Office in their country.

  • We suggest that you apply well in advance of your intended travel dates, especially during busy seasons.

  • Canada does not pay hospital or medical services for visitors.  We encourage visitors to have medical insurance in place before leaving for Canada. 

  • Harmony Homestay can assist visitors in obtaining insurance for your stay in Canada.

Custodianship

Immigration Canada requires that all applicants under the age of 18 years who will apply for study permit have a legal custodian to act in place of a parent in times of emergency such as when medical attention is required. Applicants must provide proof in the form of notarized declarations; one signed by the parent or legal guardian in the country of and one signed by the custodian in Canada.
